We live in the golden age of travel. You can fly to anywhere in Europe even from the U.S. West Coast for less than $100 one way (Wow Air), or you can sign up for a bunch of credit cards and be flying free in a relatively short period of time.
We are simple people and avoid multiple credit card signups. So, we jump on offers only when we feel it’s truly compelling. SPG just initiated a limited time SPG Amex offer that will net you 35,000 points if you spend $5,000 within the first six months. The same offer is available for the SPG Business credit card as well, albeit at a higher spend requirement. Why is this so compelling, and so timely?
- This is the highest signup bonus SPG has ever offered, and it hasn’t come around often
- This could save you critical Chase Ultimate Rewards points or cash if you’re trying to use Marriott points to get the Southwest Companion Pass
110,000 Southwest RapidRewards miles will automatically give you a Southwest Companion Pass until December 31, 2018. Many bloggers value the points and pass to be worth $850 each at a minimum, and you and a designated companion can take free flights everywhere Southwest flies, even to the Bahamas! Details here.
If you don’t want to sign up for multiple Southwest credit cards to earn the miles needed, an alternative is to transfer hotel points to Southwest, the deadline for which is March 31, 2017. That’s right, no more hotel point transfers allowed after that date! Marriott has multiple Flight and Hotel package combinations, all available here. As shown in the table below, the 270,000 Marriott points level will get you over the 110,000 Southwest miles hump required for the pass. And you a get a 7 night Marriott stay at any of their properties around the world to boot!
We don’t recommend using Chase Ultimate Rewards points for this, they are too valuable and come in handy for premium Hyatt hotel and premium longhaul flight redemptions. The other alternative is to accumulate SPG or Marriott points via hotel stays, promos, credit card signups, and actual discounted points purchases.
Right now, 1 SPG point converts to 3 Marriott points so if you get both the SPG Personal and Business credit cards, 35,000 x 2 + 5000 + 3000 = 78,000 SPG points = 234,000 Marriott points. You can cover the balance of the Marriott points required by using Chase Ultimate Rewards points transferred to Marriott, by signing up for a Marriott card, or by purchasing SPG points for cash and converting to Marriott.
The time to act is now if this makes sense for you, given the March 31, 2017 deadline for hotel points transfers to Southwest.
